Obamamania

Editorial for the Houston Community Newspaper, Inc.
Steven F. Hotze, M.D.
April 3, 2008

Throughout history people have longed for a political savior who would right all the injustices that existed in society and create a literal heaven on earth.

The Romans had their Caesars, the French their Napoleon, Germans their Hitler, Russians their Lenin. These leaders and so many others like them were viewed as the redeemers of their nations.

The Democrats have been born again through their belief in Barack Obama, the new voice of the enlightened and reviver of the utopian collectivist movement in America. This movement arose in the early 19th century and was based upon the philosophy of socialism which promised to elevate every citizen through government action by “taking from those who have and giving to those in need.” It is a doctrine of collective theft. It is the philosophy of the liberal left.

Our forefathers believed in the God of the Bible who endowed every man with certain inalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The state was not viewed as the bestower of these rights but the protector of them. Each individual was to be held responsible for his actions and the Constitution was drafted with an emphasis on ensuring these rights were defended from the oppression of government.

The power of government was diffused in the federal system by establishing the coequal judicial, legislative and executive branches. Rights not granted to the federal government devolved to the state and the people. This is the basis of the American legal and economic system.

This system has resulted in the greatest experience of individual freedom and economic vitality in the history of the world.

When the God of the Bible is rejected then the source of salvation inevitably becomes the State which will never leave us nor forsake us. It is the State in whom modern secular man places his faith, trusting bureaucrats and agencies to meet his every need and provide him with womb to tomb security.

Wherever socialism has been adopted, individual economic and political rights have been destroyed. A government controlled economy leads to a decline in the standard of living for everyone. Life degenerates to the lowest common denominator because there is no incentive for diligence, hard work and productivity.

Obama is the most liberal senator in the U.S. Congress. He wants personal and business taxes raised and will use these taxes to buy the votes of those who desire an expansion of government entitlement programs. Increased government regulation of the economy is a hallmark of his policy. Medical care would be socialized. Partial birth abortions would be allowed. The Defense of Marriage Act would be eliminated. The right to own guns would be curtailed. Obama promises a swift withdrawal from Iraq with an apparent disregard for the consequences.

Obama’s man centered collectivist political religion, no matter how well intentioned, is a prescription for disaster and must be rejected.

A true revival of the ideals of our forefathers must occur if America is to remain that “shining city on the hill.”
