Political Saviors

Editorial for the Houston Community Newspaper
Steven F. Hotze, M.D.
July 29, 2008

It is a pagan concept to view government as omnipotent and its ruler as the political savior of the people. It now appears that many Americans embrace this position as evidenced by their frenzied support of Obama. Obama seems to relish his role as the presumptive savior of the world.

Have you viewed Obama's recent speech in Berlin? Who is this charlatan addressing Germans with his messianic message? If you view Hitler's speeches before the German people in Berlin, you will find striking similarities between the two. In Berlin, Obama proclaimed himself a "citizen of the world." Like Hitler, with soaring rhetoric, Obama pledged to right the injustices of our time. Now, as then, the Berliners want a political savior. So do many Americans.

The media is fawning over Obama. Consider recent leaders who were viewed as political saviors by the elite, the intelligentsia and the media in their countries and in ours: Russian communist leaders Lenin and Stalin; Germany's Hitler; China's Mao Tse-tung; Cambodia's Pol Pot; Cuba's Castro; Venezuela's Chavez. Each of these leaders promised their citizens a utopia and instead gave them poverty and death. Millions of people were killed by these political saviors.

People who depend on the state to provide them with womb to tomb security will believe any political con artist who promises goodies for their votes. These goodies are paid for by money stolen in taxes from hard working, industrious and thrifty citizens who have taken personal initiative and responsibility for their lives. These independent, productive individuals do not want government interfering with their families and businesses. They distrust government, as did our nation's founding fathers who knew that governments had been the destroyers of liberty since the beginning of history. That is why they wrote a Constitution which limited government action and protected us from political saviors.

Totalitarian states always destroy liberty, crush their opposition and steal their property. The leaders of these regimes are evil despots who must be opposed and defeated. President Reagan understood this when he called Russia the "evil empire." The liberal media berated Reagan for his hard line against communism but he courageously persevered. Reagan was the last American president to speak in Berlin, when in 1987 he gave the challenge to Russian Premier Gorbachev saying, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall." Reagan was speaking of the Berlin Wall which separated Communist Germany from West Germany. In 1989, it came tumbling down.

Can you imagine Obama taking on the radical Islamo fascists the way Reagan confronted communism?

Like our founding fathers, Reagan saw government as the problem, while Obama sees it as the solution.

What is considered just or unjust depends upon your religious and political philosophy. The injustices that Obama sees are free enterprise capitalism, restrictions to abortion and homosexual marriages, private medical care, oil company profits, carbon emissions and conservative radio talk shows.

Obama's solution is government control of the economy and dramatically higher taxes for the producers.

May God spare us from this political savior.
